ALTO
Alternatives to Opioids Program (ALTO) was born in the emergency wing of St. Joseph’s Healthcare System. Started in 2014, ALTO uses things like harp music as a form of non-opioid treatment or alternative medication. Other non-opioid treatments for pain relief include trigger point injection, nitrous oxide and ultrasound guided nerve block.

How effective is ALTO?
- In the first 3 months, ALTO saw a 47.6% reduction in opioid use for acute lower back pain, renal colic, and headaches
- In the first 6 months, more than 300 patients at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center were successfully treated with ALTO
