Greg interviews two experts on Supervised Injection Facilities (SIF). SIFs are controlled healthcare settings, where people can safely inject drugs under clinical supervision. Currently, there are 98 SIF operations in 10 countries around the world. The two experts are: Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal and Addiction Medicine Specialist Dr. Aaron Fox. Both discuss the dire need for more SIFs across the nation, specifically in New York City.
Greg asks Assemblymember Rosenthal, chair of New York State Assembly Committee on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, if services like SIF are beneficial for people, or if they simply attract addicts and encourage substance abuse. Rosenthal sheds light on the misconception that substance abuse reduction activities will enable or increase drug use. She explains the benefits of SIF for people who utilize the program. “Not only does SIF save lives, but it also provides an environment full of resources,” says Rosenthal. “SIF helps people find a home, a job, food and healthcare. It also provides the opportunity to engage with detox professionals—when they’re ready.”
